CANNON FALLS, Minn. — The Cannon Falls community is mourning the loss of James “Jim” Edward Pagel, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and longtime local business owner, who passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday evening, August 2, 2025. He was 73.
Born June 8, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, to Edward Filmore and Betty Ann (Ranfranz) Pagel, Jim grew up in Cannon Falls, graduating from Cannon Falls High School in 1970 before attending St. Cloud State University. His life took him into service with the U.S. Army, where he worked in the military police in Bayonne, New Jersey. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to complete his degree in management and finance at St. Cloud.
On June 30, 1979, Jim married the love of his life, Lynette Payne. That same year, the couple joined the family business, Chicago Ed’s Fine Jewelry — a fixture in Cannon Falls for generations. In 1992, Jim and Lynette purchased the store from his parents, continuing its proud tradition and strengthening its place as a cornerstone of the community.
Jim’s dedication extended far beyond his business. He was an active member of First English Lutheran Church, the Cannon Falls Downtown Business Association, the Cannon Falls Chamber of Commerce, the SE Minnesota Watchmakers Association, the Minnesota Jewelers Association, and the Gemological Institute of America. His presence was felt not only in the sparkle of his jewelry displays but in the kindness, integrity, and care he showed to everyone he met.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lynette; his son George and wife, Candice Lumibao; and his beloved grandson, Edward. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends who will miss his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Betty Ann Pagel; and his sister Beth and her husband, Dennis “Denny” O’Neill.
Visitation will be held at Lundberg Funeral Home on Thursday, August 21, from 4–7 p.m. A memorial service will take place Friday, August 22, at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., at First English Lutheran Church. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person, with interment and military honors to follow at Cannon Falls Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice, honoring Jim’s lifelong spirit of generosity.
