FOREST LAKE, MN — The City of Forest Lake is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Detective Josh Brown, a dedicated officer and beloved member of the community, who passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2025. He was 38.
Detective Brown had served the Forest Lake Police Department with honor since October 28, 2017, building a career marked by integrity, commitment, and courage. Known for his sharp investigative skills and steadfast dedication to protecting others, he earned the respect of colleagues, friends, and the many residents whose lives he touched.
Beyond his badge, Josh was known for his quick wit, adventurous spirit, and generous heart. For the past eight years, he was part of the tight-knit family at Legends, where he brought warmth, humor, and camaraderie to everyone around him. “Josh shared his witty personality, big heart, and adventurous spirit with us,” a statement from Legends read. “Crystal, the girls, and our entire family are devastated. We are stunned, frozen, and ask for time to process privately with our immediate family.”
In the wake of his passing, the community has rallied together, preparing to honor his life and service. On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Detective Brown will return to Forest Lake for pending funeral arrangements. A public escort procession is planned between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m., giving residents the opportunity to line the route in tribute.
Community members are encouraged to wave flags, place a hand over their heart, or simply stand in silence as the procession passes — a collective gesture to show his family and fellow officers that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. Organizers ask attendees to park legally, remain on public sidewalks, and avoid blocking streets, businesses, or private property. The best vantage points will be along Broadway Ave W on the south side of the road and Lake St N on the east side.
In keeping with the solemnity of the occasion, parking at Mattson Funeral Home will be reserved for family and law enforcement.
The outpouring of love and support from the Forest Lake community has been overwhelming, with residents expressing deep gratitude for Detective Brown’s service and heartfelt condolences to his family. As the city prepares to say its final goodbye, the legacy of Detective Josh Brown will live on — in the safety he provided, the friendships he nurtured, and the unwavering dedication he brought to the badge.
