Ross County, OH — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Tuesday on US Route 23 near Alma Omega Road as a head-on collision claimed the life of an 18-year-old driver and left two others injured. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is actively investigating the devastating two-vehicle crash that has shaken the local communities of Waverly, Columbus, and Blacklick.
The crash occurred when Drezden Bolin-Hitchens, 18, of Waverly, was driving southeast and, for reasons still under investigation, crossed the center line. His vehicle collided head-on with a 2016 Nissan traveling in the opposite direction. The Nissan was being driven by Joseph Brandt, 18, of Columbus.
Bolin-Hitchens was pronounced dead at the scene—a young life tragically cut short before it ever had the chance to truly begin. News of his sudden passing has sent shockwaves through his hometown, where he was known for his potential and promise.
Joseph Brandt sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Adena Regional Medical Center by Huntington Township EMS. Luis Granados-Soto, a 44-year-old passenger in the Nissan from Blacklick, was also transported to the same hospital with injuries reported as non-life-threatening.
In the immediate aftermath, emergency crews from multiple agencies converged on the scene. Both directions of US 23 were shut down for approximately three hours as first responders rendered aid, cleared the wreckage, and investigators began their preliminary assessment.
Among those responding were the Ross County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Huntington and Scioto Township Fire and EMS, and the Ross County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what may have caused Bolin-Hitchens’ vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has stated that the crash remains under active investigation and is urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision to contact the Chillicothe Post.

The loss of Drezden Bolin-Hitchens has left a painful mark on those who knew him. Described by friends as kind-hearted and full of potential, his death represents more than just a fatal statistic—it is a deeply personal loss to his family, peers, and the broader Waverly community.
“He had his whole life ahead of him,” one community member shared. “It’s just so hard to believe.”
